“Originally I had an idea for a story about a large ranching family, but I wanted it to be in the north, where you would still have the big acreage. I had decided on Montana because it was wide-open country and there was a degree of isolation because of the low population level. It was going to be a contemporary story, but I still had to know how the ranch got into the family and what the family’s background would be. Most of Montana was settled by Texans. The XIT ranch, which was one of the biggest in Texas-it covered ten counties there-had a ranch in Montana, and many other famous Texas ranches were also in Montana.

Well, this was something I hadn’t heard of, and I thought, this is fascinating. Then I learned of the Dust Bowl years and the homesteaders that had come to Montana. I saw then that I didn’t have just a single story, I really had a generation story. When I decided to do the Calders, I knew that I had a lot more to work with.
