Masquerade

Masks hide.  They also enhance, tantalize, intrigue – and deceive.

In Masquerade, Janet Dailey, creates a riveting story of determined, courageous, and intelligent woman who must untangle the mystery that surrounds an accident involving her family’s international shipping company – or risk losing forever the man she loves, and possibly even her own life.  While attending the carnival in Nice, France, beautiful Remy Jardin, the daughter of a prominent New Orleans family, is suddenly attacked by a mysterious masked assailant who knocks her unconscious.  When Remy awakes, she is suffering from amnesia, and so at first she is bewildered by the potent attraction she feels toward the strangely familiar man who whisks her from her hospital bed and returns her safely to home.  Who is he?  Who is she?  Handsome, headstrong Cole Buchanan has fought his way out of a life of poverty and despair in the hard scrabble Algiers point section of New Orleans to become president of the Crescent Line, the Jardin family’s shipping company.  He also used to be Remy’s lover and the passion that once existed between them remains undeniably powerful.  But it is obvious to Remy that Cole, while still drawn to her, is furious with her and with her family – for reasons that Remy can no longer remember.  Each of them now seems to be wearing a mask.

Home at her family’s New Orleans mansion, Remy, haunted by Cole’s enigmatic behavior, strives to unravel what has happened to her, to him, and to the Crescent Line.  As she slowly regains her memory, she is frustrated by her inability to recall anything more than fragments of a truth that continues to elude her.  It is Mardi Gras time in New Orleans, and amid the glamorous society balls and Carnival parades, it begins to seem to Remy that everyone must be wearing a mask.  Why is there such animosity between Cole and her family?  What caused the mysterious wreck of the Dragon, one of her family’s ships?  What is her family, especially her father, her uncle, and her beloved brother, Gabe, trying to hide – not only from Remy, but from the rest of the world?  As Remy plunges into her search for the truth behind the facades, she encounters dangers that she could never have imagined.  She also must confront the possibility that Cole Buchanan, the man she loves and trust, is wearing a mask to -  that he has betrayed her.
